Info
Local currency is 'Kyat' and there are TWO exchange rates like
no other countries. So, there are an official rate and the market
rates. The office rate is 1 USD equal to about 6 Kyats whilst the
actual market rate is 1000 Kyat for 1 USD. Remember the market rate
is the most common rate unless you are doing trade with the
government.
Notes are issued in 50k, 100k, 200k, 500k, 1000k and 5000k.
Although officially there are smaller notes and coins, there are
not in circulation anymore.
Previously, foreigners are required to exchange at least $200 on
arrival but these restrictions are now lifted.
US Dollars the most widely accepted foreign currency in Myanmar
altough some business are starting to accept Euro in recent
years.
Note:
There are no ATM or Banks that can cash in from your traveller
cheque or cash cards in Myanmar. So, it is important that you take
enough cash (preferably in USD) to cover all your expenses before
you enter the country.
Although you are advised to bring enough cash, it is better not
to exchange them into local currency if you don't want to carry
around a rucksack of money. Since most of the people are quiet
aware of day-to-day exchange rates, you are likely to get a decent
rate everywhere around the country.
